1st Grade Guide

Teachers will utilize the comprehensive Common Core State Standards (CCSS) when providing instruction. The following are essential skills that the district has determined are critical for mastery as students progress from one grade level to the next. Each learning skill has a direct correlation to one or more of the CCSS.

In English Language Arts, first grade students will:

  • Understand and recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (CCSS RF.1)

  • Demonstrate an understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds (CCSS RF.2)

  • Utilize grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when decoding words (CCSS RF.3)

  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to allow comprehension (CCSS RF.4)

  • Retell stories with details, setting, characters, and demonstrate understanding of the central lesson (CCSS RL.1 and RI.1)

  • Identity the main topic and retell key details in text (CCSS RL.2 and RI.2)

  • Explain differences between fiction and nonfiction and locate key information in a text (CCSS RL.5)

  • Compare, contrast, and answer questions in fiction and nonfiction books (CCSS RL.9 and RI.9)

  • With support, read and comprehend literature, poetry, and informational texts appropriate for grade 1 (CCSS RL.10 and RI.10)

  • Write narratives with sequenced events, informative texts with supporting facts, and opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.3)

  • With support, use a variety of tools to produce and publish writing (CCSS W.6)

  • Participate in shared research and writing projects (CCSS W.7)

  • Use the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing (CCSS L.2)

  • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words (CCSS L.4)

  • Participate in collaborative group conversations (CCSS SL.1)

  • Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, express ideas and feelings clearly (CCSS SL.4)

In Mathematics, first grade students will:

  • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction up to 20 (CCSS OA.1)

  • Understand the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction (CCSS OA.3)

  • Add and subtract up to 20 (CCSS OA.5 and OA.6)

  • Work with addition and subtraction equations (CCSS OA.7 and OA.8)

  • Extend a counting sequence to120 (CCSS NBT.1)

  • Understand place value to the tens place (CCSS NBT.2)

  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract (CCSS NBT.4)

  • Measure lengths indirectly and by restating length units (CCSS MD.1)

  • Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks (CCSS MD.3)

  • Organize, represent, and interpret data up to three categories (CCSS MD.4)

  • Reason with 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes (CCSS G.1)

  • Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares (CCSS G.3)
