3rd Grade Curriculum Guide

 

3rd grade


Teachers will utilize the comprehensive Common Core State Standards (CCSS) when providing instruction. The following are essential skills that the district has determined are critical for mastery as students progress from one grade level to the next. Each learning skill has a direct correlation to one or more of the CCSS.

In English Language Arts, third grade students will:

 

  • Use grade-level phonics and word analysis skills (CCSS RF.3)

  • Read fluently and accurately to support understanding (CCSS RF.4)

  • Summarize, draw inferences, determine main idea, make conclusions, and cite examples in literature (CCSS RL.1)

  • Understand purpose of structure, word choice, and point of view in literature (CCSS RL.2)

  • Identify the main idea and key detail, ask and answer questions, and describe relationships in informational text (CCSS RI.2)

  • Determine the meaning of vocabulary, use text features, and distinguish points of view in informational texts (CCSS RI.4)

  • Draw conclusions, compare and contrast, and apply knowledge to fiction and nonfiction text by using illustrations and describing connections between paragraphs (CCSS RL.9 and RI.9)

  • Read and comprehend literature, poetry, and informational text at grade level (CCSS RL.10 and RI.10)

  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences and events, create informational texts to examine a topic that conveys information clearly, and compose opinion pieces with supporting reasons (CCSS W.3)

  • With guidance and support, plan, revise, edit and publish writing using appropriate tools (CCSS W.5 and W.6)

  • Conduct short research projects (CCSS W.7)

  • Write routinely over extended time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences (CCSS W.10)

  • Use language conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing (CCSS L.1 and L.2)

  • Use knowledge of language when writing, speaking, reading, and listening (CCSS L.3)

  • Determine the meaning of unknown words and acquire and use new vocabulary (CCSS L.4)

  • Engage in conversation and show understanding during collaborative discussions (CCSS SL.1)

  • Report on a topic or recount an experience (CCSS SL.4)


In Mathematics, third grade students will:

  • Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division (CCSS OA.1 and OA.2)

  •  Understand properties of multiplication and division (CCSS OA.5)

  • Fluently multiply and divide facts within 100 (CCSS OA.7)

  • Solve problems involving the four operations and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic (CCSS OA.8 and OA.9)

  • Use place value to round whole numbers and perform multi-digit addition and subtraction with 1000 (CCSS NBT.1 and NBT.2)

  • Develop an understanding of fractions as numbers (CCSS NF.2)

  • Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects (CCSS MD.1 and MD.2)

  • Represent and interpret data and use linear measurement (CCSS MD.3 and MD.4)

  • Understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition (CCSS MD.7)

  • Recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures (CCSS MD.8)

  • Reason with shapes and their attributes (CCSS G.1 and G.2)
