Portola Valley, CA - Portola Valley School District is pleased to announce that Corte Madera School has been chosen as a 2021 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. The California Department of Education recognized only 100 middle and high schools for 2021, including only 3 from San Mateo County.

According to a statement from State Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond, the California Department of Education (CDE) identifies and awards eligible schools based on performance and progress on state indicators specified on the California School Dashboard, the state’s accountability and continuous improvement system.

The recognition reflects Corte Madera’s outstanding programs and practices, including academics, social emotional learning, and climate and culture. In addition to high quality academic instruction the school also implements a strong Social Emotional Learning program which is led by the school counselor and supported by all staff, particularly our specialists.

This recognition is particularly rewarding amid the backdrop of uncertainty and hardship this year. Of Corte Madera’s selection, Principal Kristen Shima says, "We have been through so much together since the start of the pandemic, and this award is a reminder of the strength and resilience of our school community- staff, families and students- who have come together to overcome numerous challenges and maintain the outstanding learning environment we enjoy at Corte Madera."

Both of PVSD’s schools--Ormondale and Corte Madera--have received the Distinguished School honors over the years and we are proud to continue this track record.
