Volunteer Requirements and Mandated Reporter Training

Volunteer assistance enriches the educational program, increases student supervision, supports school safety, and strengthens connections between schools and the community. In compliance with California Education Code §35021 and Board Policy/Administrative Regulation 1240, the district must screen and authorize all school volunteers before they work with students.

California law also requires certain non-employees who work directly with students to complete Mandated Reporter Training before participating in school activities. This training prepares individuals to recognize and report signs of child abuse or neglect.

Who Must Complete the Training

Non-employees working directly with students must complete the training before volunteering or participating in school activities. This may include:

  • Field trip chaperones (single or recurring)
  • Classroom volunteers or teacher helpers
  • Individuals assisting with recess supervision
  • Volunteers assisting with student activities or school events
  • Contractors working directly with students
